Transforming Perspectives on Communication - Part 1

Communication is the lifeblood of culture, work, and relationships. It involves verbal and nonverbal language—body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions. While this is well-known, a lesser-known fact is the third element that differentiates effective communication: the intention behind it. Intention shapes the outcome and impact of every interaction. Here are five reasons why:

  1. Adds Clarity and Understanding: A clear intention focuses your conversation. For example, intending to express gratitude ensures the discussion stays on appreciation rather than veering off-topic.

  2. Builds Trust and Connection: Intention shapes the energy you bring. For instance, intending to build trust in a job interview leads to active listening, empathy, and openness.

  3. Resolves Conflicts Peacefully: Conversations become constructive rather than defensive when both parties aim to find a solution. For example, friends resolving a disagreement with mutual understanding can strengthen their bond.

  4. Inspires and Motivates: A coach intending to uplift their team creates empowering conversations, whereas, without intention, the words might lack impact.

  5. Prevents Miscommunication: Approaching a discussion with the intention to clarify, such as a project's deadline, reduces misunderstandings and assumptions.


Mindful intentions transform communication, building stronger relationships and creating positive outcomes. They elevate you from just a communicator to a 'Brilliant' communicator.


But how do we set the right intentions despite emotions, biases, and moods?


This requires a change in perspective.

Transforming into a 'Brilliant Communicator' requires three traits:

 1) Empathy

 2) Respect

3) Active Listening
