Transforming Perspectives on Communication - Part 3 Respect

Updated: Jan 13

Respect is the foundation of every relationship – personal or professional.

When you show respect, you convey "I acknowledge your worth as an individual of great significance." This attitude can transform relationships.

How do you show respect? Here are 5 simple yet powerful ways:

  1. By listening:

“One of the sincerest forms of respect is listening to what another has to say.” – Bryant H McGill.

Once, I was explaining the work I wanted done by the officer of the St. John’s branch of Bank of Baroda, Bengaluru. There were three to four more customers standing around him for some work. One of them tried to speak over me. The officer immediately stopped him, saying, “Let this lady finish speaking first.” I felt good; I felt I was given importance; I felt respected. I have stuck to that branch despite its distance from my house.

Active listening builds trust and mutual respect.

  2. By being thoughtful and kind: Everyone faces their battles. Showing kindness conveys, “I understand and care.” This makes others feel safe and more open, nurturing stronger bonds.

  3. By appreciating small actions: Small gestures create big impacts.

E.g. - Thanking someone for their help (e.g., "Thank you for covering my shift)

    - Noticing efforts (e.g., "Great job organizing the meeting")

    - Offering specific compliments (e.g., "Your creativity shines in this project")

  4. By accepting them as they are: Often, we judge others by our expectations. Accepting people as they are says, “I respect you for who you are.” This encourages authenticity and sincerity in relationships.

  5. By showing inclusiveness:

    - Use inclusive language (e.g., "team," "everyone")

    - Encourage participation and value diverse ideas.

Respect others’ choices, feelings, time, efforts, and space. Stop taking people for granted, and you’ll nurture love and harmony. Respect transcends barriers of age, status, and background, building bridges of trust and connection.
